We are solidly in October, and autumn is in full swing! Temperatures are finally starting to cool down, leaves are turning, pumpkin patches are opening, PSLs are brewing, all of which naturally point to a similar transition for our fall projects! What better to kick off fall knitting season with a poncho?
This is absolutely a trend we can get behind, and we can see why they’re so popular! They’re basically cozy blankets you get to wear. They’re also easy to knit because you don’t have to worry about sleeves or getting the right fit. And because it’s a trend, there are so many fun patterns to choose from.
We wanted to round up some popular patterns circulating the knitting community nowadays and pair them up with some yarn available in the shop now! Did you know we have a 10 Plus Club? It’s where we compile all of our yarns with 10+ skeins, perfect for if you’re shopping for a sweater- or poncho-quantity!
This is a great stash busting pattern! You can mix and match colorways, and even fiber weights to achieve gauge. At ~6” of ease and with a lovely brioche stitch pattern, this garment screams squishy and cozy.
Our recommended yarn:
-
Stitch & Story The Little Merino - we have 3 balls of royal blue, 2 balls of dove grey, and 14 balls of natural white. What a dreamy color combination!
-
There are also mix & match options in the Clinton Hill Cashmere Company Bespoke Worsted in Olive, Orange, Red, and White
-
This Noro Miyabi in Tsushima would also create a beautiful, self-striping effect for those who’d rather not weave in ends from color changes
We can’t get enough of this darling poncho. The scalloped edging and the lace motifs make gives this a feminine flair, while the turtle neck gives it max coziness. The pattern calls for both a strand of mohair + a strand of merino, but I imagine you could forego the mohair for a heavier weight yarn!
Our recommended yarn:
-
Budget pick: Schulana Sumerino in Deep Navy - the ply construction of this yarn would pair nicely with the lace motifs, and the deep navy is such a perfect fall color!
-
Splurge picks: there are several cashmere options that would work well with this, including L’atelier Dolce Cashmere in Orchid, Cardiff Cashmere Classic in Bosco, or String Classica DK in Dark Moss
Jolie Poncho by Milotte by Vic
This poncho has been making its rounds on the internet, and for good reason! The fringe is a cozy, classic design and the center lace panel gives the poncho just enough visual interest without overwhelming the garment. This is another garment that is written for 1 strand of mohair to be held with another yarn but you can skip the mohair in favor of a heavier weight. You might lose out on halo, but you’ll still be cozymaxxing in this one.
Our recommended yarn:
-
Go for this exact look with Parley Rhodos in Natural or Olympus James Dean Stream in Cream
-
The Olympus James Dean Stream in Brown would also work well if you prefer an earthier tone
This one is for the minimalist divas out there who want something simple, understated, and classic. Or for those who just want a mindless, endless stockinette in the round project. The mock neck is also so on trend, it’s both cozy and modern! This pattern is a new release from PetiteKnit and works best for bulky weight yarn.
Our recommended yarn:
-
Rowan Brushed Fleece in Rock would work well if you want to emulate a similar grey vibe
-
Rowan Brushed Fleece in Loch Ok, on this, hear me out! I know this is a baby blue yarn. However, imagine the baby blue as a fun pop of color over a monochromatic moody outfit. I’m thinking brown, navy, or even oxblood!
If you’ve made it this far, we commend you! We hope you love these patterns and yarn options we’ve put together. Friendly reminder to swatch before starting any of these projects, especially since substituting yarns often changes the gauge.
Any other poncho patterns that we missed that you’d like for us to find some recommended yarns for?!
